Since its establishment in 2014, the Community Health Law Partnership Clinic has aided more than 200 individuals. The initiative, directed by Associate Dean Jason A. Cade and serviced by law students, takes an interdisciplinary approach to immigrants’ rights through individual client representation, litigation and project-based advocacy before administrative agencies and federal courts.
The Veterans Legal Clinic, which was established in 2018, has helped approximately 430 veterans and their family members claim more than $1.5 million in additional benefits since opening its doors. The clinic – which primarily assists former Georgia military members with claims before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – was established with a lead gift from renowned trial attorney and 1977 law school alumnus James E. "Jim" Butler Jr.
The Alexander Campbell King Law Library operates an institutional repository - Digital Commons - that recently achieved the milestone of 3 million downloads. The repository has more than 13,000 publicly available documents and recently added a new series titled Historical Treatises, most of which are focused on the practice of law in Georgia and documents published between 1800-1920.
Distinguished Research Professor & Shackelford Distinguished Professor in Taxation Law Emeritus Walter Hellerstein presented on "Main Issues on E-Commerce and Taxation" at the online Ad Hoc Expert Group Meeting on Electronic Commerce, which was organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) during June. This principal presentation helped to "set the stage for the rest of the meeting by providing an overview of the issues relevant for e-commerce taxation.

The Appellate Litigation Clinic has won a remand in the case Smith v. Dewberry, a 1983 case where the clinic's client was stabbed two hours after warning prison officials that his eventual attacker had threatened him with a knife. The case was argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit by 2022 graduate Tinsley J. Stokes, and 2022 graduate Mark L. Bailey helped Stokes prepare for the argument.
Callaway Chair of Law Emeritus Ronald L. Carlson's book Carlson on Evidence (with M. Carlson) was recently cited by the Supreme Court of Georgia in the case Harris v. State regarding the legal foundation for electronic evidence. This citation brings the total to 64 times that this text has been used by Georgia appellate courts to resolve evidentiary issues.
The School of Law regretfully shares the news that Ellen E. Scott, a member of the Class of 2023, passed away last week. Ellen was our classmate, our colleague, our student, and our friend. She was the daughter and sister of a grieving family. Funeral services will be June 12, 2022, in the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home in Toccoa. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.
