Law Library Teams

The philosophy of the Law Library’s management structure highlights the involvement of all staff in decision-making processes,  appropriate to each person’s level of expertise. The “flat” structure contrasts with more hierarchical organizations in which authority is concentrated in a few positions at the top of a vertical structure. This difference in approaches is most easily illustrated by the absence of “middle management” positions, such as Associate Directors, at the UGA Law Library.

The policy setting body for the Law Library is the Steering Group. In addition to the Director, all professional librarians are members of the Steering Group. In keeping with noncentralized management philosophy, chair of the Steering Group rotates among the members at each Steering Group meeting.  The designated chair is responsible for compiling the Steering Group meeting agenda and facilitating discussion at the meeting.  Responsibility for minute-taking also rotates among Steering Group members.

Responsibilities for implementing policies and procedures fall to one or more of the Law Library’s teams. All staff are members of at least one management team.  In addition to representation by supervisors and participation on teams, staff members not on the Steering Group have an opportunity to voice opinions and exchange views through quarterly staff meetings.

Steering Group

Scope: The Steering Group assumes primary responsibility for governance of the Law Library. Its roles include: facilitating communication and mutal understanding between teams, approving and overseeing all library policies, monitoring and evaluating expenditures, maintaining wish lists for improvements, and ensuring that the business of the Law Library is conducted effectively.

Collection Development Team

Scope:  The Collection Development Team, guided by the Collection Development Policy, Managers the selection and cancellation of materials for the Library collection.  The team discusses collection policy issues and plans for changes in our collecting process.
