The School of Law is pleased to share that 2001 alumnus Gardiner Thompson became the most recent graduate to create an endowed scholarship supporting first-generation college graduates. "On the heels of the successful Commit to Georgia campaign, 100% of the first-generation college graduates enrolled in our Juris Doctor program now receive some level of financial aid," School of Law Dean Peter B. "Bo" Rutledge said.
Clinical Assistant Professor & Wilbanks Child Endangerment and Sexual Exploitation Clinic Director Emma M. Hetherington has been named to the 2022-23 Sexual Assault, Child Abuse, and Human Trafficking State Expert Committee, which will seek to develop best practice guidance, protocol development, training, technical assistance and other resources benefiting Georgia’s 50 judicial circuits.
Assistant Dean for Career Development Tony Waller has been voted to become president-elect of NALP (the National Association for Law Placement), an international association of over 2,500 legal career professionals who advise law students, lawyers, law offices and law schools. When he assumes the post in April, he will be the first from the state of Georgia to serve in this leadership capacity in more than two decades.
The Appellate Litigation Clinic has won a remand in the case Thomas v. Secretary, Fla. Dep’t of Corrs before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. The court remanded for an evidentiary hearing on whether amending the client's habeas petition would be futile. The case was argued by third-year student Matthew Moore, who prepared for the argument with third-year student Madison G. Mischik. 2021 graduates Jared R. Allen and Olivia B. Hunter helped write the briefs.
The School of Law proudly announces that dozens of alumni, alumnae, friends and colleagues have come together to honor Thomas A. “Tom” Eaton, Hosch Professor of Law Emeritus, with a scholarship bearing his name. The scholarship will benefit law students who have overcome significant adversity and who show great promise of making substantial contributions to the public good and the legal profession.
