

The University of Georgia Alumni Association has unveiled the 2022 Bulldog 100, a list of the 100 fastest-growing businesses owned or operated by UGA alumni. Nine companies affiliated School of Law graduates were named to the list: Abernathy Ditzel Hendrick Bryce (Sean Ditzel (J.D.'06)), Agora Vintage (Russell Edwards (J.D.'10)), The Brogdon Firm (Gino Brogdon Jr. (J.D.'11)), Caplan Cobb (Mike Caplan (J.D.'06)), Edwards & Hawkins (Cameron Hawkins (J.D.'08)), Litner + Deganian (Arman Deganian (J.D.'03)), Murray Osorio (Benjamin Osorio (J.D.'11)), Park Place Outreach Youth Emergency Services (Julie Wade (J.D.'00)) and The Spotted Trotter (Meagan Ouzts (J.D.'05)).

Rogers Chair of Law Emerita Camilla E. Watson's 2018 Florida State University Law Review article on the future of lower-income students in higher education was featured in a Reuters article. Titled "Providing aid to for-profit colleges is not a matter of racial justice," the Reuters article was written by Hassan Kanu and published 11/17/21.

The University of Georgia held a dedication ceremony Nov. 16 to celebrate the recent naming of the Institute of Higher Education in tribute to the late Louise McBee, a revered university administrator and state legislator. Following the dedication, Joan T.A. Gabel, president of the University of Minnesota and a UGA School of Law 1993 alumna, delivered the 31st Louise McBee Lecture in Higher Education. Gabel spoke on “Fulfilling Higher Education’s Social Contract and Value Proposition,” first acknowledging McBee’s contributions to the field.

Congratulations to third-year students Austin Albertson, Peyton Clark, Audrey Cunningham, Varad Dabke and Richmond Wrinkle, and second-year student Brianna Yates for winning the William Daniel Mock Trial Tournament. The tournament was a state championship event and the UGA team was the only undefeated team, winning against teams from the law schools at Emory, Georgia State and Mercer universities. The team was coached by Jeremy Dailey (J.D.’14).

Associate Dean and Martin Chair of Law Andrea L. Dennis' research was featured in Rolling Stone magazine regarding rap lyrics being used as evidence in criminal trials. The article titled "New York Lawmakers Introducing Bill to Limit Rap Lyrics as Evidence in Criminal Trials" was written by Nancy Dillon and published 11/16/21.

Distinguished Research Professor & Shackelford Distinguished Professor in Taxation Law Emeritus Walter Hellerstein presented as part of a panel titled “VAT and the Digital Economy” organized by the International Monetary Fund that was attended by more than 500 participants from countries around the world during November.

Associate Professor Laura Phillips Sawyer presented on "Myths and Facts: The Progressive Era and Populist Expressions of Antitrust" as part of a University of Southern California Gould School of Law Center for Transnational Law & Business event during November.

Congratulations to Roby H. Jernigan and James A. Stewart for winning the Intramural Moot Court Competition held recently. Many thanks to finalists Courtney H. Robinson and D. Briana Barnett as well as the other second-year law students who contributed to a wonderful tournament.

Distinguished Research Professor & Shackelford Distinguished Professor in Taxation Law Emeritus Walter Hellerstein published "Does the Supreme Court's Decision in Wayfair Apply Retroactively?" in 102 Tax Notes State 715 (Nov. 15, 2021) (with A. Appleby).

Congratulations to the team of third-year students Jordan Dillard and Ben Hancock, who were named regional co-champions after winning three rounds of competition in the ABA Regional Negotiation Competition, virtually hosted by American University. The team will compete in the ABA National Negotiation Competition in February 2022.
A second team made up of second-year students Chiodera Drayton-Smith and Taylor McClain also earned sixth place (out of 24 teams) in the competition.
