Thirty University of Georgia students, faculty and staff members who have died since April 2021 - including the law school's Davis Bergsagel - will be honored at the university’s annual candlelight memorial service on May 3 at 7 p.m. on the steps of the UGA Chapel. President Jere W. Morehead will lead the service, called “Georgia Remembers … a Candlelight Memorial.” Names of each of the 14 students and 16 faculty and staff members will be read aloud, followed by a toll of the Chapel bell and the lighting of a candle.
U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Georgia Lisa Godbey Wood, a 1990 graduate of the School of Law, will present the keynote address at the Class of 2022 Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 21.
With the help of two School of Law clinics and seven-plus years of advocacy, an immigrant grandmother has gained lawful presence in the United States. The Jane W. Wilson Family Justice Clinic's and the Community Health Law Partnership Clinic's collaborative work was performed by then students Pedro Dorado (J.D.'17), Elizabeth N. Rawlings (J.D.'18) and Mary S. Honeychurch (J.D.'18) under the direction of Associate Dean Jason A. Cade, Clinical Assistant Professor Christine M. Scartz and Community HeLP Clinic Staff Attorney Kristen Shepherd. Administrative Associate Sarah Ehlers provided key support to both clinics.
Congratulations to the School of Law's American Constitution Society student group for being named Student Chapter of the Week by its national organization for the week of April 18. The law school's chapter has grown its membership and increased its engagement this year as it transitioned from a nearly complete remote experience during the previous academic year to in-person events and activities. The group also reports the greatest number of first-year students as part of its leadership structure to date.
Associate Dean & Community Health Law Partnership Clinic Director Jason A. Cade is among the seven UGA faculty and staff members who were recently honored for their commitment to public service and outreach. Cade received the Engaged Scholar Award, which recognizes a professor who has made significant career-spanning contributions to the university's public service mission.
