The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship support in the School of Law. The scholarship amount(s) and recipient(s) shall be selected by the Dean of the School or a committee of Tara's classmates and friends appointed by the Dean. Preference may be given to women, Georgia residents, second-year students (eligible to renew the scholarship in their third year), and/or those who have demonstrated an interest in a legal career in criminal prosecution.

As a first-year UGA law student, Tara was murdered in her east Athens home on January 19, 2001, a day before her 24th birthday.

Tara graduated cum laude from Georgia College in Milledgeville in 1998, earning dual degrees in political science and paralegal studies in three years. She first worked for Hancock & Echols in Forest Park, then served a year as a real estate legal assistant at Fortson, Bentley & Griffin in Athens.  In May 2003, the University of Georgia School of Law awarded Tara Louise Baker her law degree posthumously.
