Bertis Downs: Bertis Downs lives in Athens, Georgia, where he received his law degree in 1981 from the University of Georgia's School of Law. He represented the band R.E.M. throughout the band's career and has remained an advisor to their various endeavors since disbandment. In 1988 Downs originated the Entertainment Law course at the University School of Law. Since then, he has regularly nourished his interest in teaching by speaking at various continuing legal education, law schools and music industry conferences.
Faculty Colloquium - Karen Tani
Karen M. Tani is a scholar of U.S. legal history, with broad interests in poverty law and policy, administrative agencies, rights language, federalism, and the modern American state. Her current research is about the history of disability law in the late twentieth century. She teaches torts, legal and constitutional history, and social welfare law.
Emmet Bondurant on Partisan Gerrymandering and His Life in the Law
After one week off, we'll pick up again with renowned attorney and UGA Law alumnus Emmet Bondurant, who will engage in a conversation with Professor Ringhand about the law and practice of partisan gerrymandering, especially in light of the upcoming census and a recent Supreme Court decision declaring the practice a non-justiciable political question. First Amendment Rights on Campus: Navigating Free Speech Issues for Students, Employees & Visitors
This class for UGA faculty and staff explores the legal frameworks governing speech and expression rights for members of the UGA community. Topic areas covered include, without limitation: forum analysis, time/place/manner restrictions, hate speech, public employee doctrine, academic freedom and heckler's veto.
Participants will learn about significant court decisions relating to speech rights in the higher education context and see how First Amendment principles are applied to case studies.

Professor Butler researches and teaches in the areas of criminal law, race relations law, and critical theory. He is the author of the widely reviewed "Let's Get Free: A Hip-Hop Theory of Justice," which received the Harry Chapin Media award.
