The Truancy Intervention Project (TIP) and the Engage Program are dedicated to transforming the lives of middle and high school students in Fulton County by addressing truancy issues and providing essential support to children who are at risk of falling behind in their education. TIP’s mission is to remove barriers and build stronger communities for students striving for success.
Working with the Truancy Intervention Project entails working with children in Atlanta and Fulton County Public Schools who are chronically absent from school, and as a result, become involved with the Fulton County Juvenile Court or are referred for intervention. In partnership with volunteer attorneys from various law firms in Atlanta and other professionals, TIP works to directly work with students who need intervention and in turn, disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline.
Under the supervision of TIP’s Deputy Director and Senior Staff Attorney, the extern will schedule and conduct the initial family support (Intake) meeting, to speak to the student and parent about their needs as well as their rights under the law. In addition, the extern will assist the Senior Staff Attorney with truancy cases and students qualified under Georgia’s student practice rule can represent clients in truancy court. Lastly, the extern will conduct research for the TIP Expand program that works to address and support courts, schools, and communities with truancy issues across the state of Georgia.
Availability on Tuesdays when truancy court is held.
