Sur Legal Collaborative is a legal non-profit working at the intersection of labor and immigrant rights. By collaborating directly with communities and grassroots groups, they seek to democratize legal knowledge and provide legal support to movements fighting for economic, racial, and social justice in the South. Some examples of these efforts include ensuring workplace health and safety for all workers regardless of immigration status and supporting the movement to abolish immigration detention through creative legal strategies.
Externs will assist with all aspects of Sur’s work, which may include: screening immigrant and low wage workers for potential labor violations; drafting administrative labor complaints for submission to the Department of Labor; developing Know Your Rights materials on labor and immigration issues and
participating in advocacy events; conducting research and fact investigation to develop strategies to challenge ICE detention; drafting declarations, briefs, and other legal filings; assisting with immigration matters including T and U Visas, asylum, and deferred action.
Students should have a commitment to social justice and issues impacting immigrant communities; strong legal research, writing, and interpersonal skills; and the ability to work collaboratively in a remote environment.
Preferred criteria: Employment, Labor or Immigration coursework and/or participation in the UGA Community Health Law Partnership Clinic (HeLP) or Child Endangerment and Sexual Exploitation Clinic (CEASE); Prior experience working with low-income and/or immigrant communities; Fluency in Spanish or Asian languages, including Vietnamese, Hindu, Cantonese, etc.
