Law student externs assist seasoned government attorneys in protecting consumers from unfair and deceptive trade practices. The FTC conducts investigations, sues companies and people that violate the law, develops rules to ensure a competitive marketplace, and educates consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities. They collect complaints directly from consumers about hundreds of issues--from online privacy and deceptive advertising to identity theft and Do Not Call violations--and make them available to law enforcement agencies worldwide.
Externs will receive substantive legal work on existing cases in federal court and also assist us in developing new cases. This is a great opportunity to learn the nuts‐and‐bolts of federal civil litigation. Externs will typically be engaged in discovery, fact and legal research, memo writing, document review and analysis, and conducting interviews of consumers and potential witnesses by phone.
