After you are registered, you must pay your tuition and fees. Payment of Fall 2022 tuition is due on August 17th. Please note that financial aid overage funds will not be disbursed until you have paid your tuition and fees.

Contracts

In the book, Contract and Related Obligation: Theory, Doctrine, and Practice, 8th Ed., Summers et al., please read pages 37-47 in ; read as background 3-5, 25-28; 30. 

Civil Procedure

Our casebook is Stephen Yeazell, Joanna Schwartz & Maureen Carroll, Civil Procedure (11th Edition 2023) plus 2023 Federal Rules of Civil Procedure supplement published by Aspen for the Yeazell, Schwartz & Carroll casebook.

The Limits of Judicial Power over Defendants; Personal Jurisdiction

  • Class 1: Tuesday, August 15: - Pages 1 to 14 and 44 to 45 in the casebook plus the pertinent rules and code sections in the supplement - subject matter jurisdiction, personal jurisdiction, service of process, and the lawyer’s responsibility.
  • Class 2: Wednesday, August 16: - Complete our discussion of yesterday’s materials and then start on pages 49 to 66 – Pennoyer to International Shoe.
  • Class 3: Thursday, August 17: - Complete discussion of Pennoyer and International Shoe.
  • Class 4: Friday, August 18: - Pages 66 to 69 – McGee, Hanson v. Denkla and Absorbing In Rem Jurisdiction

Torts

For the first day, please read pages 4–8 in Tort Law: Cases & Critique and Taylor Swift, Philosopher of Forgiveness by Scott Hershovitz. I’d also strongly recommend reading Orin Kerr’s How to Read a Legal Opinion before diving into the cases.

Legal Research

The first day assignment is: 

  • Complete the Welcome and Class Orientation Module in eLC, including the Introductory Questionnaire (due August 14th at 11:59 pm)
  • Complete the Reading for Week 1 posted in eLC
  • Review the Sample Class documents for Week 1 posted in eLC

Homework:

  1. Read “Front Matter,” “Reading Cases,” “Briefing Cases,” and “Local Rules and Standing Orders” in Legal Writing Manual (https://alg.manifoldapp.org/projects/legal-writing-manual)
  2. What kinds of “local rules” or “standing orders” have you encountered in real life?
  3. Write directions for me to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and submit under Assignments tab on eLC.
  4. Take Reading and Briefing Cases Quiz on eLC
  5. How to Navigate eLC
