Yvette Daniels, Jere Morehead and Mary Frances Early

School of Law alumna Yvette K. Daniels (J.D.'89) was featured on UGA Today for laying out a roadmap to be a quiet trailblazer as the keynote speaker at the 24th annual Mary Frances Early Lecture. This lecture series honors Early’s legacy of helping to integrate UGA in 1961 and recognizes her dedication to making UGA an institution of higher learning for all people.

Brock Professor Nathan S. Chapman has received a McDonald Distinguished Senior Fellowship from the Emory University Center for the Study of Law and Religion. He is one of 19 scholars selected from leading universities across the United States and Europe to "promote a new set of scholars" and develop an "integrated series of books and articles rooted in the intersection of law and religion." Notably, Chapman was chosen as a McDonald Distinguished Fellow in 2019.

Distinguished Research Professor & Shackelford Distinguished Professor in Taxation Law Emeritus Walter Hellerstein presented as part of the "Taxable Persons and Related Issues in VAT Law" panel at the Court of Justice of the European Union: Recent VAT Case Law conference hosted by the Institute for Austrian and International Tax Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business during January.

Congratulations to third-year student Holly C. Jordan and second-year student M. Drake Jones for winning Region VI of the National Trial Competition. A second Georgia team comprised of third-year student Doraly G. Blanton and second-year students Caitlin M. Banks and M. Luke McGahren finished as regional semifinalists. Notably, McGahren was named best advocate of the competition. Jordan and Jones will represent UGA at the national tier of the competition to be held during April.

Callaway Chair of Law Emeritus Ronald L. Carlson's book Carlson on Evidence (with M. Carlson) was recently cited by the Georgia Court of Appeals in the case Mason v. State regarding when a family violence nurse was qualified to testify about the strangulation of a victim in an assault case. This citation brings the total to 70 times that this text has been used by Georgia appellate courts to resolve evidentiary issues.

The Thorpe family, which includes 2014 alumnus Benjamin W. “Ben” Thorpe and his mother Dr. Barbara Williams, has pledged $350,000 to enable the clinic to build on its tradition of interdisciplinary advocacy at the intersection of immigration status and health.
