The Council on Legal Education Opportunity, Inc. will award five $500 scholarships to select entering first-year law students who have a demonstrated passion for protecting the civil rights of all Americans, especially those who are disenfranchised.
The scholarship is named in honor of Attorney Vernon E. Jordan, Jr. in recognition of his more than 50 years of service to the legal profession and lifetime commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals from underserved communities.
Groomed to make a dierence in American life from an early age, Mr. Jordan became a trailblazer in the civil rights movement in the early 1960s after graduating from Howard University School of Law. As a practicing civil rights attorney in Atlanta, Georgia, he was one of only 393 African-American lawyers in 10 Southern states. He joined the NAACP as a Field Director early in his career, working to end discrimination, increase voter registration, and change laws to support legislation beneficial to all Americans. Mr. Jordan has received several Presidential appointments, served on numerous corporate boards, and garnered myriad honors and accolades. He also is the author of the best-selling book, Vernon Can Read! A Memoir, and Make It Plain, Standing Up and Speaking Out.

Eligibility Requirements
o U.S. citizen or permanent resident
o Enrolled in ABA-approved law school (fall 2020)
o Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
o Current or previous volunteer or other work associated with civil rights
o Demonstrated commitment to work with and assist underserved communities
o Proven financial need
Application Requirements
o CLEO will use the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) guidelines to determine applicant's low-income eligibility.
o Two-page double-spaced essay on how you will use your law degree to advance civil rights.
