Appellate Litigation Clinic gains victory in court

Monday, March 3, 2014

Congratulations to 2013 alumni M. Paula Briceno, Brittany M. Cambre and Crystal M. Johnson for their UGA Appellate Litigation Clinic work in representing a franchisee in his claim against his franchisor and its former chief executive officer. Johnson argued the case in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in front of a panel that included retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The Fourth Circuit certified the case to the Virginia Supreme Court, where the clinic partnered with a major Virginia firm. The state's highest court answered both certified questions in the client's favor. The case likely will be remanded to district court for further proceedings.
