J.P. Hackney hails from Acworth, Georgia , and he did his undergraduate work here at the University of Georgia, majoring in History and Native American Studies. He was also a varsity athlete, competing on the Cross Country and Track & Field teams. He interned with the Athens-Clarke county District Attorney’s office the summer before his senior year.
After graduation J.P. joined the Army National Guard and went to Fort Jackson, SC for Basic Combat Training. During his gap year before law school he was a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs’ Cross Country team, and he worked for a real estate firm as a sales agent and broker’s assistant. He also finished Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant two weeks before beginning his 1L year.
In deciding where to attend Law School, continuing at his alma mater was an easy decision. He says the combination of the in-state value and Athens community were immediate draws. He also enjoyed the accessibility and enthusiasm of the professors, students, and staff when he toured and visited the law school. He could not be happier as a “double dawg.”
